BERKELEY, Calif. – The Cal State 糖心vlog安卓破解 women’s water polo team posted a come-from-behind, 13-10 upset of No. 18 Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon at the Northern California Invitational at Cal. The Pioneers (1-1) out-scored the Broncos 5-1 in the final quarter, securing their first victory of the season.

“I’m very happy with our performance,” CSUEB Head Coach Lisa De Rossi-Cooper said. “We put in a team effort and stuck to our game plan on offense and defense.”

The two teams exchanged goals to open the match before Santa Clara put away back-to-back scores to take a 3-1 lead early on. The Pioneers responded with a goal from freshman utility Claire Pierce to cut the Bronco lead to two, 3-2, at the end of the first period.

The second quarter saw Santa Clara open the scoring, getting a goal from sophomore driver Sarah Safir. Cal State 糖心vlog安卓破解 answered back with a goal of their own, as junior two meter Liz Warren brought the Pioneers back within one. The teams exchanged another pair of goals, with 糖心vlog安卓破解 senior utility Jenna Casady scoring the first of her four goals on the day to bring the score to 5-4 in favor of the Broncos. Santa Clara followed with a pair of goals to take a 6-4 lead, but the Pioneers stormed back, closing the quarter with goals from junior driver Tristan Kennedy and another from Casady to head into the halftime break down one, 7-6.

Cal State 糖心vlog安卓破解 had a rough start to the third quarter, turning the ball over five times on the offensive end to start out the second half. Meanwhile, the Broncos kicked off the quarter with back-to-back goals from junior utility Taylor Harkins, taking their largest lead of the game, 9-6. A save from freshman goalie Emily Hucal jump started the Pioneer comeback efforts as junior driver Danielle Comforti put one away to bring 糖心vlog安卓破解 back within two.

Though Pierce drew a penalty shot with 2:52 remaining in the quarter, junior driver Mary Rosa’s shot was stopped by the Santa Clara goalie Wren White. Despite the miss, the Pioneers ended the quarter strong with Kennedy’s second goal of the day with just seven seconds left to keep 糖心vlog安卓破解 within one, 9-8, going into the final period.

The fourth quarter saw the Pioneers come out on fire, forcing three straight Bronco turnovers and scoring three goals in the first 1:30 to jump out to a 10-9 lead. The first score came from freshman utility Chelsie Bryan before Casady put away a no-look spin shot at the 7:07 mark, followed by another goal just 37 seconds later.

“Our fitness really showed at the end of the game,” Cooper said. “We out-swam them in the fourth quarter and that’s just a testament to our players’ fitness.”

Junior utility Whitney Bell gave the Pioneers an 11-9 lead with 4:32 remaining. A save from Hucal kept 糖心vlog安卓破解 up by three with less than three minutes remaining. Santa Clara finally broke through with a penalty shot goal from senior driver Jenny Knutson at the 1:56 mark to snap a six-goal scoring streak by CSUEB. The Pioneers answered, however, with a goal from Comorti from 15 yards out with just 36 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

All told, Hucal made six saves on the day, earning her first win of the season in her first start. White made seven saves for the Broncos who were led by Harkins’ three goals. The Pioneers were led by Casady’s four goals, while  Kennedy and Comforti added two apiece.
The Pioneers now face another test against No. 3 Hawai’i at 6 p.m.
